Food Safety
We aim to achieve and maintain high standards of food hygiene within all food establishments in the District to reduce the instances of food borne disease and to help consumers improve their health by providing information on healthy food choices.
We undertake the following duties in relation to food control:-
- food hygiene and food standard inspections of all food businesses
- routine microbiological and chemical sampling of food and drink products
- investigating consumer complaints
- investigating incidents of food poisoning
- promoting and raising awareness of food safety and food related health issues, through provision of training and associated activities
- respond to Hazard Warnings and Alerts about specific food products
- provision of advice and guidance to consumers on food safety issues
- working together with other agencies to achieve goals
- advise businesses on layout of food premises, hygiene standards and food labeling
When carrying out a Food standards inspection we cover the following issues with a view to protecting consumer health and preventing fraud:
· Ensuring the accuracy of food labelling
· Descriptions of food products
· Claims made about them
