Types Of Work Activities

In Northern Ireland, Local Authorities are responsible for enforcing Health and Safety legislation in retail, wholesale and office premises. The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) deal with other premises e.g. factories and manufacturing premises.

These businesses are regularly inspected to ensure that they comply with current health and safety law. The frequency of inspection is determined by the risks found and confidence in management to control risks.

We enforce Health and Safety legislation in premises where the following activities take place:

  • retail or wholesale distribution
  • catering businesses
  • permanent or temporary residential accommodation including caravan and camping sites
  • coin operated launderettes and similar cleaning premises
  • cosmetic and therapeutic treatments, with certain exceptions
  • leisure activities, including entertainment, and other cultural or recreational activities
  • places of worship
  • child care, playgroup or nursery facilities.
