The Western Home Environmental Assessment Project commenced on the 1st November 2009 and is well under way in the Omagh District Council area. WHEAP is a 5 year project, funded by the Big Lottery, the Public Health Agency and the 5 Councils in the West, to support families with children under the age of 5 years and persons over 65 years, with issues of safety, security and health.
We aim to reduce home accidents, fuel poverty and fear of crime as well as to improve physical and mental health and well-being of residents in the community. Kieran Cranny, the Home Assessment Officer for the Omagh District, is currently carrying out visits across the district, providing advice on issues around:

Following assessment of households may be supplied with equipment to reduce the possibility of accidents and increase security. Listed below are examples of equipment that may be available through the scheme.

- Door Chains (Wooden / PVC)

- 24 hr Plug in Timer
- Magnetic Window Alarm
- Referral into Community Safety Partnerships e.g. Social Alarm Systems
- Referral to Crime Prevention Units within the PSNI.
The WHEAP Home Assessment Officer is also a referral agent for the Warm Homes Scheme and can ascertain through a home visit if the resident is eligible for the scheme. He will make the initial referral on the resident’s behalf and remain as a point of contact and support throughout the process.
