Making Arrangements for the Marriage Ceremony
It is important to make early arrangements for the date and time of your marriage.
Contact the Registrar once you have decided on your date and then room availability and times can be confirmed.
If you choose to use an approved centre they will need to complete and anApplication form AP1, which can be obtained from the Registrar.
Upon completion the bride and groom need to sign and return it to the Registrar’s Office.
Completion of the Marriage Notice Form
By law each party to a proposed marriage is required to complete a marriage notice form.
Once completed you will need to bring it to the Registrar’s office in the Council area where you are getting married.
The forms must be accompanied by
- your full birth certificate
- passport
- decree absolute for any party who has been previously married
- a death certificate for a widow/er
The notice fee for each form is £20.00. The forms may be submitted in person or in the post normally eight weeks prior to the wedding. Once these forms are submitted the Register can prepare the Marriage Schedule, which is the official document signed at the ceremony. To ensure all details are correct we would ask that the bride and groom come into our office the week leading up to the ceremony to check the Schedule details and finalise any other arrangements.
The Marriage Ceremony
While nothing of a religious nature may be included in the ceremony, there can be provision for the inclusion of music, poetry, exchange of rings etc and this should be discussed with the Registrar, as should the need for any flower arrangements.
It is important that the marriage ceremony should commence on time as more than one marriage may be planned on that day.
The Schedule will be signed by the parties, two witnesses and the Registrar after the Ceremony.
The marriage Ceremony lasts approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
Interpreters
If an interpreter is required the onus is on the parties to provide one and they will need to sign a declaration to the effect that s(he) is able to understand the language in respect of which s(he) is to act as an interpreter at the marriage ceremony.
Marriage Certificate
After the ceremony the Registrar will register the marriage and the certificate is usually posted out to your chosen address. You will need this certificate to change bank accounts, gain passports etc
