"We all know that sport provides enjoyable leisure time activity and entertainment for many people. It can also help to make improvement to people's lives in fundamental ways. If we are going to achieve these benefits, we need to understand the difference that sport makes and why structured approaches to sports development may be necessary."
Sports Development is a process by which sport and physical activity is managed in order to ensure a positive change in sporting/coaching behaviour and increased physical activity throughout the community.
This involves:
- Co-ordinating the provision of sustainable sport and recreation facilities within Omagh District to meet the needs of the community.
- Providing young people with a quality introduction to sport and physical activity and to encourage them to remain involved.
- Increasing the number and quality of competent coaches throughout the District.
- Increasing the levels of health related physical activity in partnership with a range of agencies.
- Enabling talented individuals and teams to achieve success at regional, national and international level.
The work of different organisations/agencies involved in providing sport and health services should be drawn together to provide an integrated framework of opportunities for everyone.
