Neighbourhood Renewal

Neighbourhood Renewal Partnerships bring together government departments, statutory bodies, community representatives and the voluntary sector to work together to improve the quality of life for those living in neighbourhood renewal areas. Five Neighbourhood Renewal areas were established around Omagh in 2007: Mullaghmore, Strathroy, Campsie, O’Kane Park, Gallows Hill/Johnston Park housing estates. Taking a community planning approach the Partnerships have developed a strategy and action plan to address 4 key themes:

  • Economic Renewal
  • Social Renewal
  • Community Renewal
  • Physical Renewal

The action plan is a working document and is regularly reviewed by the Partnership to ensure that the projects identified meet the educational, health and economic needs of the communities involved.

Community groups work within Neighbourhood Renewal Areas to address these issues as well as a reduction in anti-social behaviour, personal safety, alcohol abuse and poor physical environment.

Neighbourhood Renewal funding has facilitated a number of projects to address issues affecting the Omagh Neighbourhood Renewal Area, including improved street lighting and footways, environmental improvements, health programmes, community facility refurbishment, after-school programmes, community training and capacity building, social activities and summer schemes.

The Council’s Development Department facilitates delivery of the programme at a local level on behalf of Department for Social Development. The Council also provides a secretariat for the Partnership.
