Biodiversity Events
One of the key aims within the Omagh Local Biodiversity Action Plan is to raise awareness and understanding of biodiversity within the public.
We offer free wildlife events throughout the year highlighting seasonal biodiversity and important places for wildlife.
This page will be updated with new events as and when they are confirmed. Please check our main new section on the homepage too for full details.

‘Mini beast’ detectives wanted!
Join our wildlife team on Saturday 26th May 2012 and explore the gardens and woodland at Strathroy community centre to discover what creepy crawlies lurk beneath! From graceful little ladybirds to buzzing bumblebees, you can find out how to help your garden wildlife. The event runs from 1 – 4pm and the first 50 participants past the starting post will receive a free wildflower plant to help get them started!
The Biodiversity Games is a recording project which is supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund, ‘Your Heritage’ Programme in partnership with eight biodiversity officers throughout Northern Ireland which aims to get people involved in helping their local biodiversity.
The project is designed to train a new generation of wildlife recorders. If you are unable to attend this event, there are a series of other events running in 2012 and 2013 which aim to get more people interested in recording their local biodiversity. To support you, we are also running a recording equipment loan scheme. Ranging from bat detectors to moth recording, fungi forays or mammal tracking, we aim to cater for your interests!
To find out more about our events, the recording scheme or simply the biodiversity of Omagh, please contact the Biodiversity Officer in Omagh District Council on 02882256202, email Imelda.mccarron@omagh.gov.uk. All activities are FREE of charge, please wear appropriate footwear and all children must be accompanied by an adult.
The Omagh Local Biodiversity Action Plan project is part funded by Northern Ireland Environment Agency. Gortin Glen is a state forest managed by the Northern Ireland Forest Service.
