Yellow Woods Challenge 2009

Seskinore School wins top green award for Yellow Woods Challenge 2009

Congratulations to our Gold Oak Award Winner, McClintock Children’s Centre on coming top of the small schools category in the Northern Ireland finals of the Yellow Woods Challenge, the environmental campaign for schools run by Yellow Pages working in partnership with the Woodland Trust and local authorities. Queen Elizabeth II Primary School won the Silver Birch award while St Davog’s Primary School received the Bronze Beech award.

For every pound given to schools, Yellow Pages has donated a matching pound to the Woodland Trust – the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity. The money from the Yellow Woods Challenge supports our Tree For All campaign, which aims to plant 12 million native trees – that’s one for every child in the UK.

Compost Awareness Week 2009

During Compost Awareness Week Omagh District Council encourages residents to improve their gardens in a sustainable way by making optimum use of their brown bin, home composter or choosing peat free compost. Compost produces a natural soil enhancer and prevents garden waste being sent to landfill and saves our fragile peatland habitats and wildlife.

A large percentage of our household rubbish is green waste, including grass cuttings and prunings, which are ideal for making compost. The average household in Omagh District could divert over a quarter of the contents of their grey wheelie bin by using their brown bin or home composter. Since April 2009 the brown bin scheme has been extended to include food waste.

Need A Bag Week 2009

Reduce Reuse Recycle

As part of a continual effort to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill Omagh District Council with the support of many of the shops and supermarkets in the district encouraged shoppers to replace the disposable plastic carrier bag with a reusable “Bag for Life” during “Need A Bag” week 2009. Many of the shops throughout the district actively promote reusable bags and encourage shoppers to keep bags in the car for convenience. Make it a lifestyle choice to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
