Omagh District Council introduced brown bins in Omagh town to recycle organic waste including garden and food waste to households as part of the Council's strategy to work with residents to reduce waste and recycle more. Reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill makes financial savings for the Council and Ratepayers and is of real value to the community.
From 28th March 2011 Omagh District Council are extending the Brown
Bin Service to towns and villages throughout the district.

The following towns and villages will receive a Brown Bin for Food and Green Waste
Fintona, Dromore, Gortin, Greencastle,Trillick, Kilskeery, Carrickmore, Fox Park, Mountfield, Loughmacrory, Hawkes Cresent, Sixmilecross, Beragh, McFarland Terrace, Dooish and Drumquin
This move comes as a result of grant aid secured by the Waste Management Team at Omagh District Council from the Department of the Environments Rethink waste capital grant project. This project is a recycling initiative by Omagh District Council to increase the recycling rate and decrease waste to landfill.
Residents on the extended scheme will receive the following: A Brown wheeled bin, a food waste caddy, a roll of caddy liners, an instructional leaflet and collection calendar.
The collection of the brown bins from these new areas will commence in the week commencing Monday 28th March 2011. However householders can commence using the brown bin to dispose of compostable waste in the weeks leading up to the first collection date. The collection day for the brown bin will be clearly identified on the calendar supplied with the bin and caddy.
Residents who do not receive a Brown Bin can avail of a free Home Compost Bin which can be collected with proof of address at the Council Works Depot, Gortrush Industrial Estate.

What do you do with the kitchen food waste caddy.
The small kitchen caddy is for your convenience. You can keep it in your kitchen to hold any food waste, and once it is full, empty it into your brown bin. We will not be emptying the small caddy as part of your fortnightly collection – the waste must be left out in your brown wheelie bin
Where does the Brown Bin waste go?
The contents of your Brown Bin go to Natural World Products in Keady where it is processed In-Vessel to produce a high quality compost and used for horticultural purposes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q Why Recycle Organic Waste
Recycling food and garden waste is much better than sending it to landfill. Organic waste dumped in a landfill rots underground without air, leaking toxic chemicals into the soil and methane, a damaging greenhouse gas into the atmosphere contributing to global warming. Your actions will help to cut down the amount of food waste that ends up in landfill sites and turn it into a natural fertiliser.
Q How much food waste is thrown away each year?
Households in the UK throw away 8.3million tonnes of food every year. Wasting food costs the average family with children £680 a year. Most of this is perfectly good food.

Q Can I use plastic or biodegradable bags to line my caddy?
No. This is because not all varieties of bags are produced to the quality that makes them fully compostable. Biodegradable bags do not break down sufficiently in the time taken for the food waste to compost down. Your bin will not be emptied if it contains plastic or biodegradable bags.
You may only use only compostable liners supplied or recommended by Omagh District Council. You may also put food waste into the bin loose or wrap in newspaper.
Q The refuse crew have placed a contamination sticker on my brown bin which says my bin contains things it shouldn't. What does this mean?
This means that your bin cannot be emptied because you have put waste in the bin that is not acceptable and will contaminate the material collected for recycling. Please make sure you read your instruction leaflet and information sticker on the side of the bin to ensure you know what is acceptable in the brown bin. Refuse crews will not lift contaminated bins.
Q Will my bin smell and be messy?
No, not if you keep the bin lid closed. Putting cardboard or newspaper at the base of the bin will help to soak up any liquids. Avoid keeping the bins in direct sunlight. If you have any garden waste, you can place this over your food waste to keep any potential smells in.
Q Will having food waste in my brown bin for two weeks attract vermin or flies?
If you keep the brown bin lid closed, flies, maggots or vermin will not be able to get to the waste. Rats are only attracted to loose food or waste that is left outside the bin A scientific study conducted by DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and Cranfield University, found that there is no increased risk of flies and vermin if rubbish is properly wrapped and the bin lid is closed. Another report carried out in July 2009 confirms these findings. http://www.wrap.org.uk/downloads/Commentary_-_scoping_study_of_potential_health_effects_Final1.7a0bf294.7445.pdf
